Does My Insurance Cover That? Common Insurance Myths

Common Myths (and What You Really Need to Know)

“Does my insurance cover that?” is one of the most common questions we hear — and honestly, it’s a smart one to ask. Insurance policies can feel confusing, and many people assume they’re covered… until they’re not.

In this blog, we’re breaking down some of the most common insurance myths and what you should actually know before something unexpected happens.

Myth #1: “I’m fully covered because I have insurance.”
  • Having a policy doesn’t automatically mean everything is covered. Coverage depends on policy limits, deductibles, exclusions, and endorsements. Two people can have the same type of insurance — like homeowners or auto — and very different levels of protection.

The takeaway: Always review the details, not just the policy title.

Myth #2: “My home insurance covers floods.”
  • This is one of the biggest misconceptions out there. Standard homeowners’ insurance typically does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is usually a separate policy, even if you don’t live in a high-risk area.

The takeaway: If water damage worries you, ask specifically about flood coverage.

Myth #3: “Full coverage auto insurance covers everything.”
  • “Full coverage” isn’t actually a technical term. It usually refers to a combination of liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage — but limits still apply, and certain situations may not be covered.

The takeaway: Know what your auto policy includes and what it doesn’t.

Myth #4: “My personal policy covers my business stuff.”
  • Working from home or running a side business? Personal insurance often has limited or no coverage for business equipment, inventory, or liability.
  • Business Personal Property or BPP explained here.

The takeaway: Business activities usually require additional or separate coverage.

Myth #5: “If something changes, my policy automatically adjusts.”
  • Life changes — new home, new car, renovations, new valuables — but your policy doesn’t update itself. If you don’t report changes, you may be underinsured without realizing it.

The takeaway: Keep your agent in the loop as life evolves.

The Bottom Line

Insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all, and assumptions can be costly. The best way to avoid surprises is to ask questions before you need to file a claim.

At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we believe understanding your coverage is just as important as having it. If you’ve ever wondered, “Does my insurance cover that?” — let’s talk. We’re here to help you feel confident, informed, and protected.

Winter Driving Tips for Truckers

Winter weather brings some of the most challenging road conditions truckers face all year. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures increase the risk of accidents and breakdowns, making preparation essential. At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we want to help you stay safe, protected, and confident on every mile this season.

Start With a Solid Pre-Trip Inspection

Cold weather can wear down equipment quickly. Before you hit the road, double-check:

  • Tire pressure and tread
  • Brakes, lights, and wipers
  • Battery strength
  • Antifreeze and fluid levels
  • Heaters and defrosters

Catching small issues early can prevent major problems in winter conditions.

Slow Down & Increase Following Distance

Icy roads reduce traction, and even fully loaded trucks can slide. Reduce your speed, avoid sudden movements, and give yourself more room to react. In winter weather, extra following distance is one of your best defenses.

Stay Alert for Black Ice

Black ice can form on bridges, overpasses, and shaded stretches of highway—often without warning. If your truck begins to slip, ease off the accelerator and steer gently. Quick braking can make a slide worse.

Carry a Winter Emergency Kit

Every trucker should be ready for unexpected delays or breakdowns. Your kit should include:

  • Warm clothing and blankets
  • Food and water
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Traction aids or chains
  • Ice scraper, shovel, and de-icer

Preparation can make a stressful situation much safer.

Keep Fuel Tanks at Least Half Full

Fuller tanks help reduce condensation and ensure you have enough fuel to stay warm if you get stuck in traffic or need to wait out a storm.

Check Weather & Road Conditions Before Every Trip

Stay updated on changing forecasts, closures, and detours. When winter storms are severe, delaying your run may be the safest choice.

Winter Home & Auto Safety Tips

When the temperatures start to dip, it’s not just the chill in the air that you need to prepare for — it’s what that cold can do to your home, your car, and your peace of mind. Winter weather brings beauty and excitement, but it can also cause costly damage if you’re not ready. At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we want to help you stay safe and protected this season with a few smart preventive steps.

Winter Home & Auto Tips

How to Stay Safe in the Cold

Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter insurance claims — and one of the most avoidable. When water freezes, it expands, which can cause pipes to burst and lead to major water damage.

To prevent it:

  • Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F, even when you’re away.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate around pipes.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor faucets.
  • Let faucets drip slightly on especially cold nights.
Drive Smart in Slick Conditions

Icy or snow-covered roads can turn even a short drive into a dangerous one.

Winter driving safety tips:
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up.
  • Check your tires for tread and proper inflation.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
  • Avoid cruise control on slippery roads.

And remember: even the most careful drivers can experience an accident in icy conditions. Make sure your auto insurance coverage is up to date before the snow falls.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Winter storms can cause power outages, falling tree limbs, and roof damage.
To stay protected:

  • Trim weak or overhanging branches near your home.
  • Keep gutters clear to prevent ice dams.
  • Review your homeowners’ policy to make sure it covers winter-related damage, including water and wind.

A quick insurance review can help you understand exactly what’s covered — and where you might need additional protection.

At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we’re here to help you review your coverage, make adjustments, and ensure you’re prepared for whatever winter brings.

Driving After Dark: Stay Safe as the Days Get Shorter

As the days grow shorter and daylight fades earlier, more of us will find ourselves driving in the dark — whether it’s the commute home, errands after work, or evening activities. With Daylight Saving Time over, it’s important to remember that night driving can be just as risky as distracted or impaired driving. Reduced visibility, glare, and driver fatigue can all contribute to making nighttime roads more hazardous.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe when the sun goes down.

The Eyes Have It
  • The more birthdays we have, the more important it is to get our eyes examined. Get routine checkups and schedule additional appointments if you notice changes in your vision. All in favor say, “eye”!
Clean and Check Your Headlights
  • Dirty or misaligned headlights can cut visibility in half. Give them a thorough cleaning, replace any burned-out bulbs, and ensure they’re aimed correctly so you can see clearly without blinding oncoming drivers.
Keep Your Windshield and Mirrors Clean
  • Even a thin film on the inside of your windshield can cause glare from headlights and streetlights. Use glass cleaner regularly and make sure wiper blades are in good shape.
Watch Out for Fatigue
  • Driving tired can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence. If you feel drowsy, pull over safely to rest or grab a cup of coffee before getting back on the road.
Slow Down and Stay Alert
  • Depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision all decrease at night. Lower your speed and give yourself extra time to react to other vehicles, pedestrians, and wildlife.
Minimize Distractions
  • Even a quick glance at your phone can be risky, especially in the dark. Keep your focus on the road, and use hands-free technology only when absolutely necessary.
Adjust for Weather Conditions
  • Fog, rain, or early frost can make night driving even trickier. Use your low beams in fog, slow down in wet conditions, and be extra cautious on cold mornings and evenings when roads may be slick.

The bottom line: With less daylight ahead, now’s the perfect time to refresh your night driving habits. A little extra caution can go a long way toward keeping you and everyone else safe on the road.

Celebrating 60: Raymond Nelson’s Story

This year marks an incredible milestone of 60 years in the insurance industry for Mr. Raymond Nelson. What began as a young man’s first job has grown into a lifelong career built on hard work, honesty, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Raymond’s journey is not just the story of a business, it’s the story of a man who turned determination into a legacy.

Raymond Nelson’s Story

Raymond Nelson is known throughout our community as a hardworking, determined man. At the age of 36, he took a leap of faith and began the journey that would define his career. He built the business that still bears his name today.

After graduating from Muhlenberg Central High School in 1962, Raymond left his hometown for the first time to attend Western Kentucky University. College, however, wasn’t where his path was meant to be. He completed just one class, Chapel, before deciding to return home.

Once back, his father insisted he find a job, so Raymond began working in construction before eventually discovering his calling in the insurance industry. On October 11, 1965, he joined Life and Casualty Insurance Company of Tennessee, earning just $75 a week. For ten years, he knocked on doors, selling insurance across the region from Monday through Friday. This experience that would build both his resilience and his reputation.

In August of 1975, he entered a partnership and co-founded Nelson-Hale Insurance Agency. When his partner later bought out his share in December 1980, Raymond struck out on his own. Just two months later, in February 1981, he opened Raymond Nelson Insurance on Country Club Lane. On that very first day, he had no customers, but with determination and a phone book in hand, he started calling everyone he knew. Slowly but surely, his business began to grow.

By 1984, he found his niche in trucking insurance, serving as the agency’s only salesperson for nine years. At that time, his small but mighty team included a receptionist, a bookkeeper, and one customer service representative. Growth continued steadily, and in 1993, he welcomed another producer to the team.

In April 2011, Raymond expanded again by acquiring J.G. Keown Insurance Agency, merging it with his own and returning to a full-line agency.

Today, Raymond Nelson Insurance proudly serves clients across 23 states with a team of 20 dedicated employees. Just ten years ago, those numbers were 14 states and 10 employees — a testament to his ongoing vision and hard work.

Who would have imagined that a small-town boy from Muhlenberg County, Kentucky — who once dropped out of college — would go on to build one of the region’s most successful insurance agencies? His story is proof that when you find what you love to do, success will follow.

A Legacy Still Growing

As Raymond celebrates six decades in the insurance industry, his story continues to inspire those around him. What started with one man has become a thriving agency built on integrity, service, and heart.

Here’s to 60 years of dedication and a legacy that will continue to grow for generations to come.

How to Create a Family Emergency Plan

September is National Preparedness Month—a reminder that life can change in an instant. Whether it’s a severe storm, power outage, or unexpected emergency, being prepared can make all the difference in keeping your family safe and secure. At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we believe peace of mind starts with preparation. Here’s how you can create a family emergency plan and take simple but important steps to get ready.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

Emergencies are stressful, but knowing what to do ahead of time can save precious moments. Sit down with your family and:

  • Choose a meeting place inside and outside your neighborhood.
  • Assign responsibilities (who grabs the pets, medications, or important documents).
  • Share emergency contacts with every family member.
  • Practice your plan regularly, just like a fire drill.

This ensures that when the unexpected happens, everyone knows where to go and what to do. Consult the Red Cross Emergency Resource Library for tips on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from specific disasters.

Build a Disaster Supply Kit

A well-stocked kit helps you weather an emergency until help arrives. Consider including:

  • Bottled water (at least one gallon per person, per day for three days)
  • Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • First aid supplies and medications
  • Important documents (ID, insurance policies) in a waterproof container
  • Blankets, extra clothing, and personal hygiene items
  • Cell phone chargers (including portable power banks)
  • For a more comprehensive list of Red Cross supplies, click here.

Store your kit in an easily accessible location and check it twice a year to refresh supplies.

Stay Informed

Sign up for local weather alerts and know how to tune into emergency broadcasts. Having a battery-powered radio can be a lifesaver when the power goes out.

Preparedness Brings Peace of Mind

National Preparedness Month is the perfect opportunity to take action. By creating a plan, building a supply kit, and staying informed, you’re giving your family the tools to stay safe during the unexpected.

Does My Homeowners Insurance Cover Wind Damage to My Roof?

When strong winds roll through, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your homeowners’ insurance will cover the damage. If you’re dealing with missing shingles, dented siding, or worse after a storm, it’s important to understand what your policy actually protects.

At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we’re here to help you feel confident in your coverage. Let’s break down what homeowners’ insurance typically covers when it comes to wind damage, especially for your roof and siding.

Wind Damage Is Usually Covered

Most standard homeowners’ insurance policies do cover wind damage. Wind is considered a “named peril,” which means it’s one of the specific risks typically listed in your policy.

If a storm causes:

  • Shingles to blow off your roof
  • Pieces of your siding to detach or crack
  • Debris to damage your home’s exterior

…you’re likely covered—as long as the damage was sudden and accidental.

Roof Damage: What’s Covered?

Insurance will typically help pay to repair or replace your roof if:

  • Wind tears off shingles or parts of the roof
  • A fallen tree (caused by wind) damages the roof
  • Wind-driven rain enters your home because the wind compromised the roof

However, there are limits:

  • If your roof is older or already in poor condition, your claim may be reduced or denied
  • Coverage may be based on actual cash value rather than full replacement, depending on your policy and roof age

Pro Tip: Keep your roof well-maintained and document its condition with photos—this helps if you ever need to file a claim.

What About Siding?

Siding damage from wind—such as cracks, holes, or pieces blown off—is also typically covered. But there’s a common issue: matching siding.

Insurance will cover the damaged portion, but it may not cover:

  • Replacing all the siding if the original material is no longer available
  • Full siding replacement just to maintain a uniform look

Some policies offer matching siding coverage—be sure to ask us if yours includes this.

How to Make Sure You’re Covered
  1. Review your policy—especially the sections about wind and roof coverage
  2. Ask about exclusions or limitations related to roof age or siding replacement
  3. Consider endorsements or optional add-ons, such as:
    • Roof replacement cost coverage
    • Matching siding endorsement
    • Wind/hail deductible options

Storm Season Is Here—Be Prepared

At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we don’t just sell policies—we make sure you understand them. If you’ve recently experienced wind damage or just want peace of mind about your current coverage, we’re here to help.

Let’s review your policy together so you can face the next storm with confidence.

Why Making Left Turns May Be Riskier Than You Think

At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we’re always looking for ways to help our clients stay safer on the road. That’s why we’re bringing attention to a surprising statistic: over 60% of intersection crashes involve a left turn. It’s a number that’s causing some traffic experts—and even major companies like UPS—to rethink how we navigate our roads.

So why are left turns so dangerous? And could avoiding them really make that much of a difference? Let’s take a closer look.

The Hidden Risks of a Left Turn

Left turns might seem like an ordinary part of driving, but they’re actually one of the riskiest maneuvers you can make—especially at busy intersections. Here’s why:

  • Multiple points of conflict: When turning left, you often have to cross oncoming traffic, watch for pedestrians, and navigate around cyclists. That’s a lot of potential hazards in one move.
  • Limited visibility: Oncoming vehicles, parked cars, or even other turning vehicles can obstruct your view, making it hard to judge distance or speed accurately.
  • Pressure to make a decision quickly: At intersections without a dedicated left turn arrow, drivers often feel pressured to “go for it” when they see a gap in traffic, which increases the risk of a collision.
What the Experts Say

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), left-turn crashes are far more likely to result in serious injury than right-turn crashes. That’s one reason traffic engineers in some cities are designing road systems that reduce or eliminate left turns altogether—including more roundabouts, dedicated U-turn lanes, and restricted intersection designs.

Why Some Companies Are Skipping Left Turns

One of the best-known examples of avoiding left turns comes from UPS. Their routing system is designed to minimize or eliminate left turns on delivery routes. The results?

  • Improved safety for their drivers and the public.
  • Significant time savings by avoiding delays waiting to turn.
  • Lower fuel consumption and emissions from reduced idling.
  • This is especially true for trucking companies.

If a global delivery company can save millions by avoiding left turns, imagine the impact it could have on your daily commute.

Bad Driving Habits? Here’s How to Break Them.

Let’s be honest — we’ve all developed some not-so-great driving habits over time. Whether it’s rolling through stop signs, glancing at your phone at a red light, or treating speed limits more like suggestions than rules, these small lapses can add up to big risks.

The good news? Bad driving habits can be broken — and this National Safety Month is the perfect time to refocus on the road and make a few simple changes that could save lives.

Common Bad Driving Habits (and How to Break Them)

    • Distracted Driving – Texting, eating, adjusting the GPS — these distractions take your attention away from what matters most. Try putting your phone on “Do Not Disturb” before driving and handling adjustments before you hit the road.

    • Speeding – Running late doesn’t justify putting yourself or others at risk. Obeying speed limits isn’t just about avoiding tickets — it gives you more time to react and avoid accidents.

    • Rolling Stops – A “California roll” might save a few seconds, but it can cost you dearly in a collision. Always come to a complete stop and check for cross-traffic and pedestrians.

    • Ignoring Turn Signals – It might seem small, but failing to signal can lead to confusion and crashes. Always use your turn signal to communicate with other drivers.

Why It Matters — Beyond Safety

Aside from protecting your life and the lives of others, driving responsibly can have other benefits:

  • Lower Insurance Rates: Safe drivers often qualify for lower premiums.
  • Fewer Repairs: Avoiding accidents means fewer trips to the auto shop.
  • Peace of Mind: When you’re driving safely, you’re reducing stress for yourself and others.

Refocus. Reset. Drive Safely.

At Raymond Nelson Insurance, we believe small changes can lead to big results. As we observe National Safety Month, we encourage all drivers to take a moment to check in with their habits behind the wheel. A little extra caution can go a long way — and might even save a life.

Stay safe, drive smart, and contact Raymond Nelson Insurance for personalized coverage that keeps you protected no matter where the road takes you.
