What is Operation Safe Driver Week?

Operation Safe Driver Week is a safe-driving awareness and outreach initiative aimed at improving the driving behaviors of passenger and commercial motor vehicle drivers through educational and traffic enforcement strategies, as well as interactions with law enforcement.

Throughout Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel will be on the lookout for commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky driving. Law enforcement officers will pull over identified unsafe drivers and issue a citation or warning.

Data show that traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement help reduce problematic driving behaviors. By making contact with drivers during Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel aim to make our roadways safer by targeting high-risk driving behaviors.

US Driving Statistics

In the U.S., speeding has been a factor in more than a quarter of crash deaths since 2008. (statistics)

Speeding of any kind was the most frequent driver-related crash factor for drivers of commercial motor vehicles and passenger vehicles in the U.S. (large truck and bus crash facts)

Speeding was a factor in 29% of all U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024, killing 11,288 people.

Why Operation Safe Driver Week Was Started

Operation Safe Driver Week serves as an important reminder that safe driving habits save lives. Law enforcement agencies will focus on reducing risky behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.  Speeding contributing to nearly one-third of traffic fatalities and thousands of lives lost each year due to distracted and drunk driving. Drivers should stay alert, obey traffic laws, and make responsible choices behind the wheel. By working together to improve driving behaviors, we can help make our roads safer for everyone.
